Strength Training for Youth

Mark Helme

Strength training is a well-established activity for adults pursuing either athletic performance or health and well-being. However, there is still some uncertainty around strength training for children, specifically is it good for them and how young is too young? In this course we will explore some of these questions, by addressing the evidence relating to strength training in 5- to 11-year-old children, debunking some of the myths that are often heard. We will conclude by providing some guidance as to how younger children should undertake strength training.

This course will cover the following topics.

  • Why is youth strength training needed
  • What are the myths and misconceptions around youth strength training.
  • How do children adapt to strength training
  • Guidelines for strength training in younger children.
