Module 2: Introduction to R

Ryan White

This module provides an introduction to using R and RStudio for basic data analysis and visualisation, specifically tailored for sport science applications. The content covered in this module consists of the fundamentals of R as a programming language, highlighting its role in statistical computing and how it can be used to enhance decision-making and research in sport science.

The module will guide you through:

  • Installing R and RStudio effectively.
  • Performing basic arithmetic and operations in R, including variable assignment and scripting best practices.
  • Understanding and working with simple data types (e.g., numeric, logical, character) and converting between them.
  • Utilising essential data structures such as vectors, matrices, lists, and data frames to organise and manipulate data.
  • Importing data from CSV files, performing analyses, and exporting results for further use.
  • Summarising sports data using descriptive statistics and identifying key insights.
  • Creating visualisations, such as histograms, boxplots, and scatter plots, to detect trends and outliers.

Upon completing this module, you will have a solid understanding of R and RStudio and be equipped to use these tools to enhance your educational journey into the world of data analytics and support your sport science practice with basic data science fundamentals.
